The descriptions and analyses which are available on the subject of pr
ofessional culture in the police force, define it as an assembly of ch
aracteristics shared by all members of the group at varying degrees. E
mpirical data however point out a great pluralism in opinion, attitude
and values. This leads to proposing a different interpretation of pro
fessional culture in terms of internal common space, based on two majo
r notions which deeply divide the group: the relation with the law and
with others.
