In 1992, Sainsbury's achieved the distinction of becoming the largest retailer in the UK. Sainsbury's is also the largest food retailer in t he UK, with well over 300 stores trading under the J. Sainsbury name a nd another nine hypermarkets trading under the Savacentre name. The sa les of the company as a group demonstrated significant growth in the l ast seven years rising from just under pound 3 billion in 1984, to ove r pound 8 billion in 1991. Group sales for the year ending March 1992 were pound 9.2 billion.
