Abstract
Two sets of generalized symmetries of the potential Nizhnik-Novikov-Ve selov equation are given in a simple formula by developing a generaliz ed formal series method for searching symmetries of one type of genera lized partial differential equations. These two sets of symmetries con stitute an infinite-dimensional Lie algebra which contains three types of Virasoro algebras and three w(infinity) type algebras as its speci al cases.
