L. Salvo et al., INTERFACIAL REACTIONS AND AGE-HARDENING IN AL-MG-SI METAL-MATRIX COMPOSITES REINFORCED WITH SIC PARTICLES, Materials science & engineering. A, Structural materials: properties, microstructure and processing, 177(1-2), 1994, pp. 173-183
Al-Si-Mg matrix composites have been fabricated by the compocasting te
chnique using as-received and oxidized particles. Interfacial reaction
s occurring during fabrication and during subsequent remelting of the
composites were characterized by detailed analytical transmission elec
tron microscopy. The effects of these reactions on the age hardening r
esponse of the materials are also characterized and discussed in detai
l. The results show that it is possible to control the interfacial rea
ctions either to totally suppress age hardening or to give rise to har
dening in the case of a normally non-hardenable matrix alloy.
