Abstract
The effect of adsorption on mass transfer within immobilization matric es was investigated using pentachlorophenol (PCP) with polyurethane fo am and with alginate beads containing activated carbon. The adsorption of polyurethane foam increased the mass transfer rate by approximatel y 20 times. The mass transfer rate in beads was also increased by the adsorption on immobilized activated carbon. The effect of adsorption c an be explained by the decrease of solute concentration in matrix pore s and by surface diffusion. This process has been modeled using an eff ective diffusivity model for porous media.
