Re. Junge et al., PERIARTICULAR HYPEROSTOSIS AND RENAL-DISEASE IN 6 BLACK LEMURS OF 2 FAMILY GROUPS, Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 205(7), 1994, pp. 1024-1029
Progressive, proliferative periosteal disease associated with renal di
sease can develop in black lemurs (Eulemur macaco macaco), perhaps as
the result of a heritable condition. Clinical signs in lemurs with pro
gressive, proliferative periosteal disease associated with renal disea
se differ from that described for animals with hypertrophic osteoarthr
opathy in the distribution of lesions (predominantly metaphyseal rathe
r than diaphyseal) and the organ systems involved (renal rather than t
horacic or gastrointestinal). Histologic changes evident on postmortem
examination of lemurs with progressive, proliferative periosteal dise
ase associated with renal disease are identical to lesions described f
or other animals with hypertrophic osteoarthropathy.
