The change of thermodynamic equilibrium-state functions, such as the c
hange in enthalpy Delta H or free enthalpy Delta G, in bond dissociati
on processes is well known in general. On the other hand, the systemat
ic investigation of the change in electrical and electro-optical prope
rties, such as the dipole polarizability alpha, seems to be a rather u
nexplored field in physical chemistry. In this Communication we report
on a remarkable correlation between the change in dipole polarizabili
ty Delta alpha and the bond dissociation energy D-298(0) for various d
issociation processes.
