Cm. Dufournaud et al., AN APPLIED GENERAL EQUILIBRIUM (AGE) ANALYSIS OF A POLICY DESIGNED TOREDUCE THE HOUSEHOLD CONSUMPTION OF WOOD IN THE SUDAN, Resource and energy economics, 16(1), 1994, pp. 67-90
The Sudan, along with all Sahelian countries, faces urgent environment
al problems caused, in part, by the clear-cutting of scrub for firewoo
d. In this paper, we analyze the economic consequences of a policy oft
en proposed to reduce the consumption of firewood. Specifically, we si
mulate the policy of introducing more efficient wood burning stoves in
to households by using an Applied General Equilibrium (AGE) model. The
results indicate that the anticipated reduction in the economy-wide d
emand for wood, based on the increase in the technical efficiency of t
he stoves, is not fully realized.
