A theory of the transient response of an electrochemical system to a p
otential-step perturbation (chronoamperometry) is developed using the
Sumi-Marcus formalism. Depending on the value of the rate constant, th
e current response can be diffusional or exponential. The rate constan
t obtained includes strongly nonadiabatic and solvent-controlled limit
ing cases. A new method of determining the range of electron transfer
adiabacity is proposed.
