The electrochemical characteristics and changes in the parameters of t
he thin structure of single zirconium crystals, whose effective surfac
es were nonsingular stepped faces [n(100) - (101)] (where n is the num
ber of atomic rows on a terrace) are investigated. It is demonstrated
that crystallographic orientation exerts a significant influence on co
rrosion rate. During the absorption of hydrogen and further ''aging''
of specimens, the hydrogen that had been implanted in the lattice is r
edistributed from nonstable tetrahedral positions on the terrace to st
able octapores on the steps.
