M. Abdelrohman, DESIGN OF TUNED MASS DAMPERS FOR SUPPRESSION OF GALLOPING IN TALL PRISMATIC STRUCTURES, Journal of sound and vibration, 171(3), 1994, pp. 289-299
The galloping of a tall flexible structure with a square cross-section
due to quasi-steady wind flow is obtained analytically. The structura
l parameters which control its magnitude are investigated. The use of
a passive tuned mass damper to control the galloping amplitude increas
es the degrees of freedom of the structure which makes the analytical
solution for the galloping amplitude more difficult. This paper presen
ts a simple approach to estimate the galloping amplitude in the presen
ce of a tuned mass damper, and which can be used in design of a tuned
mass damper for the suppression of galloping.
