Nucleon emission in the quasi-elastic region is studied for the C-12(e
, e' p) and C-12(e, e' n) reactions. We present a model which couples
the one-nucleon emission channels microscopically and treats the multi
-nucleon emission channels phenomenologically. We analyze the spectral
functions extracted from the C-12(e, e' p)B-11 reaction measured at N
IKHEF-K and Saclay and make predictions for the C-12(e, e' n)C-11 spec
tral functions. The ratio of the C-12(e, e' p)B-11 and C-12(e, e' n)C-
11 spectral functions is found to depend strongly on the two-nucleon i
nteraction. We analyze the contribution of the one-proton and one-neut
ron emission channels to the inclusive longitudinal and transverse res
ponse functions. Our analysis suggests the importance of multinucleon
emission in the quasi-elastic region. The ratio of the experimental tr
ansverse-to-longitudinal structure functions is satisfactorily reprodu
ced.
