Abstract
Microdisk structures have been used to achieve low-threshold lasing. F or these microcavity lasers, the spontaneous emission coupling factor beta is an important parameter since it determines the threshold curre nt of the laser. Theoretical calculation of beta based on the exact so lution of the modes in a microdisk is complicated. A simple, approxima te method for solving the waveguide modes and the density of states is developed here, using conformal transformation and the Wentzel-Kramer s-Brillouin approximation and taking into account the effect of the di sk thickness. We find that the beta value for a microdisk laser is sma ller than that of an ideal laser that has a cylindrical waveguide stru cture with a strong index guiding. A considerably high value of beta c an still be achieved, however, in a microdisk laser.
