Magnetoresistive permalloy films are characterized by having two possi
ble output states that correspond to different directions of magnetiza
tion. This article describes the use of a pulsed easy axis field to ob
tain a single predictable state that does not depend upon the past his
tory of the external applied field. The magnetization reversal occurs
at one field value only which is opposite in direction to the pulsed e
asy axis field direction and is accurately predicted by the Stoner-Woh
farth model.
