Although conditional stimulus (CS)/unconditional stimulus (US) conting
ency awareness appears to be necessary for human Pavlovian autonomic c
onditioning, only a selective review of the literature and the forgett
ing of certain basic, brute facts can allow the cognitive conclusion t
hat awareness causes, or even is important for, conditioning. That con
clusion is theoretically barren for explaining the phenomenon and is a
lso of little potential practical use.
