The generic position of an aerobic, Gram-positive organism known as ac
tinomycete MG417-CF17 was determined following isolation of the PCR am
plified 16S rRNA genes and alignment of the resultant sequence with co
rresponding sequences from representatives of the family Pseudonocardi
aceae. The assignment of the organism to the genus Amycolatopsis was s
trongly supported by chemotaxonomic and morphological data. The strain
was distinguished from representatives of validly described Amycolato
psis species by a number of phenotypic properties. It is proposed that
strain MG417-CF17 be classified in the genus Amycolatopsis as Amycola
topsis japonicum sp. nov.
