Pd/NaY and Pd/NaHY catalysts have been obtained by chemical vapor depo
sition of allylcyclopentadienylpalladium and characterized by temperat
ure-programmed reductive decomposition and by EXAFS. In the conversion
of methylcyclopentane at 300 degrees C, the non-acidic catalyst shows
a constant 100% selectivity towards ring-opening without significant
coke deposition. In particular, the deactivation rate is lower than wi
th the non-acidic system prepared by a conventional method. With the b
ifunctional Pd/NaHY catalyst ring enlargement is predominant, and sign
ificant coke deposition occurs as confirmed by temperature-programmed
oxidation measurements. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
