The degradation products of tetraalkyllead compounds used as antiknock
additives are unique indicators of automotive environmental pollution
by lead. Recent dramatic improvements in species-specific ultrasensit
ive analytical procedures enabled the identification and quantificatio
n of organolead compounds in ancient Greenland snow which is considere
d as the archives of northern hemispheric pollution records. Organolea
d species determined in fresh and ancient polar snow demonstrate unamb
iguously the global range of petrol-related pollution not only with io
nic Pb2+ but also with more toxic metalloorganic compounds.
