C. Coluzza et al., SPATIALLY LOCALIZED ENERGY SHIFTS IN THE PHOTOEMISSION SPECTROSCOPY OF INSULATORS, Journal of applied physics, 76(6), 1994, pp. 3710-3713
Core-level photoemission peaks taken on several insulators with spatia
l resolution of 30-300 mu m rigidly shift in energy from place to plac
e, most likely because of local charging effects. Such phenomena can a
ffect the linewidth and the general lineshape of conventional, spatial
ly integrated spectra even when a flood gun is used, which is one of t
he standard remedies against charging. This may require a critical rev
ision of photoemission linewidths and lineshapes for many past experim
ents on insulators.
