Abstract
A Clostridium species causing spoilage of vacuum-packed refrigerated p ork was isolated and characterized. The unknown organism differed phen otypically from other clostridial species usually associated with spoi lage. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing demonstr ated that the psychrotroph represents a distinct line of descent withi n the genus Clostridium. It is proposed that the organism be classifie d as a new species of the genus Clostridium, Clostridium algidicarnis.
