Abstract
This paper discusses the utility of racial identity theory and the nig rescence construct as a framework for understanding the career develop ment attitudes and behaviors of African American people. The relevance of this framework for reinterpreting and elaborating on career develo pment theory is illustrated. Research issues pertaining to the influen ce of racial identity attitudes on values, perceptions of opportunitie s, occupational stereotyping, career decision making, and work force d iversity are examined.
