The cure rate of a high gloss overprint varnish was compared using a s
tandard medium pressure mercury lamp and a high intensity xenon chlori
de lamp. Samples with equal photoinitiator concentration cured at a mu
ch faster rate using the xenon chloride lamp. It was found that the co
ncentration of the photoinitiator could be greatly reduced and still g
ive rapid rates of curing when the xenon chloride lamp with peak outpu
t at 308 nm was used.
