Abstract
Senior police officers from Berlin and Northern Ireland have in common the task of policing divided communities and cohabiting with a milita ry presence, and as such were expected to share similar profiles of jo b-related stressors and exhibit equivalent coping strategies. While so me similarities were found, the study reports some interesting differe nces, with German officers emerging as more stressed and using a great er variety of coping strategies than those from Northern Ireland. Diff erences are discussed in terms of dimensions of duration and expectedn ess of threat.
