Abstract
This paper is a review of the hydrography of the northwestern Mediterr anean. It examines, at several scales from basin-scale to local proces ses, water mass distribution, circulation and driving mechanisms and t heir variability. It is focused on those aspects that may influence th e success of spawning and recruitment of anchovy: stratification proce sses, continental influence, frontal instabilities, mesoscale events a nd shelf-slope exchanges.
