Abstract
Optical transmission technology is progressing to the point where it c an deliver data at rates that can strain conventional electronic broad band networks. In this article we discuss how optical networks may pla y a role in relieving this strain. Different optical network architect ures are discussed according to the services they provide; the technol ogies used to implement those services, and the geographical size of t he network.
