Abstract
We point out a mechanism for stabilizing expanding turbulent domains i n annular flows. This nonlocal mechanism is explained within the conte xt of a Ginzburg-Landau equation for a real amplitude. The expression for the nonlocal term can be derived by analogy with existing calculat ions in Taylor-Couette flow for Taylor vortices. Numerical results are compared with experiment.
