To study the ultrafiltration (UF) properties of host-guest binding sol
utions, we carried out UF experiments using cycloxtrins (CDs) as host
molecules and nitrophenols (NPs), structural isomers, as guest molecul
es. The following conclusions were obtained. 1. The UF rejection of gu
est molecule rises by addition of host molecule CD. This is induced by
host-guest binding. 2. The rise ratio of guest molecular rejection (e
ta) is reduced with operation pressure DELTAp when DELTAp is over 1 MP
a. But eta is constant when DELTAp is below 1 MPa. This is independent
of kind of membranes and of pressure. 3. The order of eta of NPs is o
-NP<m-NP-<p-NP. This relation is same as that of the strength of host-
guest binding. 4. eta becomes large with pH. This is induced by the hy
drogen bond of secondary hydroxide group of CD to nitrophenolate ion t
hat nitrophenol is charged into alkaline solution.
