Abstract
Strict self-assembly of complementary dianionic and dicationic tetrahy drogen bond donors and accepters leading to infinite molecular chains in the solid state is achieved in aqueous solution using both directio nally controlled hydrogen bonding and ion-pairing electrostatic intera ctions.
