The elusive cyanodiazonium ion, NC-N-2(+), proposed as a transient int
ermediate in solution, but never directly observed, can be obtained in
the gas phase by ionization of a mixture of nitrogen trifluoride and
cyanamide, and characterized by collisionally activated dissociation (
CAD) mass spectrometry.
