Abstract
Experimental studies have been carried out an the decomposition modes of austenite in two varieties of ferritic steels. The variations in mi crostructural parameters with cooling rate and composition are explain ed in terms of thermal strain associated with cooling. A thermodynamic rationale is discussed to explain the difference in the driving force of austenite to martensite transformation in the steels under conside ration.
