Surface-active properties of polycyanoacrylate monolayers at the air-w
ater interface were investigated. Monolayers of polycyanoacrylates wit
h the side chains comprising six to ten carbon atoms were found to be
stable at the water surface and could be transferred to a hydrophilic
or a hydrophobic surface by the Langmuir-Blodgett method. Water temper
ature during the formation of polycyanoacrylate monolayer was maintain
ed at 16 - 18-degrees-C. Molecular masses of polycyanoacrylates With C
5, C-7, and C-10 side chains formed at the water surface were found to
be 1.5 x 10(5); 0.4 x 10(5), and 2.2 x 10(5), respectively.
