Abstract
What has formed historically here is best left to history. This also h olds true for the issue of the German nation and of the forms of Germa n statehood. What is important now is the political aspect. There are two German states with different social and political systems. Each of them has values of its own. Both of them have drawn lessons from hist ory, and each of them can contribute to the affairs of Europe and the world. And what there will be in a hundred years is for history to dec ide.
