Phthalocyanines have been noted for their use as chemical sensors. Iro
n phthalocyanine (FePc) has been used as a model to elucidate the gas
sensing mechanism using transmission Mossbauer spectroscopy to charact
erize bulk properties and conversion electron Mossbauer spectroscopy t
o study surface interactions. This technique allows an FePc sample to
be monitored before, during and after exposure to various gases at amb
ient temperatures and pressures, hence mimicking gas sensor operating
conditions.
