Abstract
In this paper we study the rings defined by ideals of minors, not nece ssarily of fixed size, of a symmetric matrix of indeterminates. We pro ve that they are normal, compute the divisor class group and the canon ical class. We determine the Gorenstein rings among the rings under co nsideration.
