Hofmann rearrangement has been carried out in polymeric amides synthes
ised from styrene-divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymer. A series of crosslin
ked copolymers with varying crosslink densities have been prepared by
adjusting the monomer/crosslinker ratio. The amide function is introdu
ced into the polymer matrix through a series of polymer-analogous reac
tions. These are treated with sodium hypobromite in the presence of ex
cess alkali. The products have been characterized by elemental analyse
s and spectral data. A temperature dependent relation between rearrang
ement and hydrolysis has been observed.
