T. Jacobson et al., SYMPATHOMIMETIC DRUG-ABUSE MASKING AN ENDOGENOUS HYPERADRENERGIC STATE, GRAVES-DISEASE, Behavioral medicine, 20(2), 1994, pp. 91-94
Sympathomimetic drug use or abuse in a thyrotoxic individual can be cl
inically devastating as a result of enhanced cellular sensitivity to a
drenergic stimulation. Thus, it is critical to recognize thyrotoxicosi
s in a patient with coexistent sympathomimetic drug abuse. This case r
eport describes a patient with Graves' disease and severe hyperadrener
gic symptomatology that was thought to result from sympathomimetic dru
g abuse.
