With the aim of creating a reusable antimicrobial fibrous cellulosic m
aterial, we studied the interpolymer reaction involving a cellulose gr
aft copolymer with sodium polyacrylate, and an antimicrobial polycatio
n, polydimethyldiallylammonium chloride. The characteristics of this i
nterpolyelectrolyte reaction have been shown to differ from those of t
he formation of a polyelectrolyte complex between the corresponding mo
del water-soluble polyelectrolytes, and also from the interaction of t
he cellulose graft copolymer with the sodium polyacrylate and another
polycation, polyhexamethyleneguanidine.
