A new range of metallocene catalysts, Cp2MCl2 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) has bee
n developed in the past decade, which, in the presence of alumoxanes a
re highly efficient at polymerizing alpha-olefins (ethene, propene, et
c.). Variation of the substituents attached to the cyclopentadienyl ri
ngs leads to changes in catalyst selectivity and activity. Further, fo
r alpha-olefin polymerisation, variations of the ring substituents lea
ds to variation of the tacticity of the polymer product. Studies in wh
ich the influence of the ring substituents have been explored have bee
n reviewed.
