De. Fields et al., USE OF AEROGEL FOR IMAGING CHERENKOV COUNTERS, Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research. Section A, Accelerators, spectrometers, detectors and associated equipment, 349(2-3), 1994, pp. 431-437
In the past, detectors using silica aerogel as a Cherenkov radiator tr
eated this material as a diffuse source of Cherenkov photons. In this
paper we report on measurements made to explore the feasibility of usi
ng aerogel for imaging Cherenkov purposes. The results of the measurem
ents are reproduced by a detailed Monte Carlo. This allows us to ident
ify parameters critical for the use of aerogel as a radiator in imagin
g detectors. We conclude that commercially available aerogel can be us
ed for these purposes.
