This study estimated the impacts of on- and off-campus work on first y
ear student cognitive outcomes. With controls made for precollege cogn
itive level and other relevant influences, amount of on- and off-campu
s work had little negative impact on first year reading comprehension,
mathematics, or critical thinking. The small, single-institution, vol
unteer sample may limit the generalizability of the study.
