A mechanism of the emergence of excess surface tension in titanium nit
ride ultrafine powders is discussed. It is shown that this tension may
arise if there is a radial concentration gradient of the excess vacan
cies in a particle. The most probable cause of the appearance of this
gradient is a short cooling time of a particle in the reactor. The pro
posed model satisfactorily describes the experimental dependences of t
he lattice parameter on particle size and annealing temperature.
