Many images can be viewed in terms of simpler components, such as a ha
nd viewed as a collection of fingers and a palm. Recognition can then
be achieved by finding these components and examining the relationship
s between them. If each component can be further decomposed into sub-c
omponents, then this approach may be applied recursively to the image
until some low-level primitives are obtained. This decomposition impos
es a hierarchy upon the recognition, as the same image is described at
several different levels as a collection of increasingly simple parts
. This paper explores an attempt to solve a recognition problem using
such an approach. Notably each level of the problem is solved using es
sentially identical techniques. This uniformity of approach suggests a
great potential for generalisation to many different types of recogni
tion problem.
