Dealing with the problem of iron gall ink burn, the authors studied th
e relevant technical literature and then asked by correspondence 26 re
storers from 9 countries (Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France. Hungary, I
taly, the Netherlands, United Kingdom and United States) for their opi
nion, experience and their attitude to the problem. Quite great discre
pancies were to be stated, regarding not so much the scientific unders
tanding description of the phenomenon but such fundamental questions f
or practical treatment as working with water or avoiding aqueous treat
ment.
