Copolymers of vinylidene cyanide, methacrylonitrile, and acrylonitrile
with various captodative monomers such as cyanovinyl acetate, methyl
alpha-acetoxyacrylate or methyl 1-(methoxy carbonyl) vinyl carbonate w
ere synthesized by radical copolymerization. The microstructures of th
ese copolymers were studied by means of C-13 NMR. The copolymers of vi
nylidene cyanide are rich in alternating structure, and the copolymers
of methacrylonitrile and acrylonitrile are rather statistical than al
ternating. The measurements of reactivity ratios for three copolymeriz
ation reactions, vinylidene cyanide, methacrylonitrile, and acrylonitr
ile with methyl alpha-acetoxyacrylate, confirm these conclusions.
