The second refractive virial coefficient has been computed for Ne, Ar,
Kr, Xe, CH4, and SF6 using the best empirical intermolecular potentia
ls available and a model for the pair polarizability trace which accou
nts for both long-range and short-range effects. The results are compa
red with experimental data from the literature. It is found that the o
verlap contribution to the pair polarizability trace is significant an
d can be reasonable modeled with an exponential term.
