Abstract
A simple theory is developed to describe noise in the scanning tunnell ing microscopy (STM) current due to temporary fluctuations of the barr ier caused by reorientations of the solvent/solute polar molecules in the tunneling gap. A framework for experimental STM studies of local d ipolar relaxation at electrodes is discussed.
