Uranium and thorium in high purity Nb2O5 were determined by neutron ac
tivation analysis followed by radiochemical separation(RNAA). A separa
tion procedure combined with anion exchange, solvent extraction with T
BP and coprecipitation with LaF3 was developed and proved to have quan
titative yields for the activation products of Np-239 and Pa-233. The
decontamination factors of major impurities were determined. The detec
tion limit for both elements was less than several ppts when a high fl
ux reactor such as JMTR was available for activation. The method is us
eful to the other composition materials containing niobium as a matrix
element.
