The magnetic properties of the rhombohedral intermetallic compound Yb3
Pd4 have been investigated using Yb-170 Mossbauer spectroscopy and neu
tron diffraction. Magnetic ordering of the Yb3+ moments sets in below
T(N) = 3.2 K, the saturated moment per Yb3+ being mus congruent-to 0.6
mu(B). The magnetic structure is antiferromagnetic and we discuss the
possible moment orientations. In the paramagnetic phase, the thermal
variation of the Yb3+ 4f shell quadrupolar moment has been measured.
