The investigation deals with the correlation between the perceived edg
e definition of defocused photographs and the corresponding physical p
arameters associated with defocus. The maximum photographic profile sl
ope was found to be a significant parameter. The sensitivity to defocu
s for a group of observers was obtained. We fit a suprathreshold senso
rial compression equation to the experimental data. This curve describ
es the compression behavior of the biological mechanism involved in th
e interaction between physical stimuli and visual sensation. It can be
shown as a region surrounded by two regions with low sensitivity.
