On-machine nip calenders have become increasingly common over the past
decade. The benefits of these installations have been extensively dis
cussed in the literature. Little attention is, however, paid to the pr
oblems of CD caliper profile control. This paper first reviews the imp
ortance of CD base sheet weight and moisture profiles in producing a f
lat sheet, then discusses the various techniques available for control
ling CD caliper profiles on these calenders. Results from pilot and mi
ll installations are used to illustrate the standards that can be achi
eved.
